Hosting Support FAQ Topic #5 - Mailing Lists

SmartList

Please note: Even though this program is installed in our administration suites, we can't get support for it. :(  That is why we no longer offer it on our options page.  With that said, please understand that we can't offer technical support on this program.  Please follow the steps below.  If you still can't get it to work, or you need a program that is very flexible and customizable, we suggest that you explore alternatives (see bottom of this page).

**If you have installed the mailing list through the "Mailing List" icon and it will not create a list in the "Mail Manager"**

If you are getting the "cannot create list" error when trying to create one, please go out to the Mailing List icon again and uninstall the mailing list.  Wait ten minutes for it to uninstall and then go back in and reinstall it. That usually fixes the problem.

You can set up a mailing list and here are a few tips on getting started.

  1. Sign into your Administration Center out at yourdomain.com/menu and click on "Mail Manager"
  2. Click on "New List"
  3. Give your mailing list a name
  4. It will give you these instructions:
To subscribe to the mailinglist, simply send a message with the  word "subscribe" in the Subject: field to the -request address  of that list.
        To: listname-request@yourdomain.com
       Subject: subscribe
To subscribe the digest, simply send a message with the word "subscribe"
in the Subject: field to the following address.
       To: listname-d-request@yourdomain.com
       Subject: subscribe

To send email to the mailinglist, write to the following address:
         To: listname@yourdomain.com

To unsubscribe from the mailinglist, simply send a message with the word "unsubscribe" in the Subject: field to the -request address of that list.
         To: listname-request@yourdomain.com
         Subject: unsubscribe

To unsubscribe from the digest, write a email like this.
         To: listname-d-request@yourdomain.com
         Subject: unsubscribe
  5. Click on the "Home" link so that it will l ist your email addresses and mailing lists
  6. Click on the link that is the name of the list you just created
  7. Type in the maintainers email address and the password you want to use to protect it.
  8. Then it will tell you something like this:
    Now, modify '/home/username/yourdomain-mail/listname/rc.custom' file...

To get to the file to customize

  1. After setting up your list and you get that message to edit the file, click on the "Administration Suite" link near the top of the screen
  2. Click on the File Manager icon
  3. Click on the yourdomain-mail link
  4. Click on the link that is the name of your list (not the one with the -d after it, though)
  5. Click on the rc.custom link to open it up so that you can edit it in the next window. (hint: you can resize that window at the bottom of the screen)
  6. If you need to choose some of the options, it asks that you "uncomment" something. That means to take the # symbol from in front of it. Just delete it.

The difference between the different list types

Newsletter:  Only the maintainer can send out anything to the list
Moderated: all messages have to be approved before they are sent to the list
Subscriber Only: any subscriber can send messages to the list

Smartlist Alternatives

We have found a couple of alternatives to smartlist that is really nice if you are having trouble with the SmartList mailing list program.

Subscribe Me

Visit http://www.cgiscriptcenter.com/
and then choose Subscribe Me from the drop down list at the bottom of the page.  There is a free version of this and a more customizable paid version. Subscribe Me Pro (the paid version) is very nice and what we use to send out our newsletters.

MailMan

http://www.interactive-web.net/freeware/mailman.html

It's a nice program that is free.  It handles multiple mailing lists and each list can handle up to 1000 subscribers. The really neat thing about this program is that you don't have to install it!  They have a form on their page where you download it that you can fill out with your ftp information and it will install it for you! Make sure that you go out to your site and create a directory for it to install to. I would call it "list".  Then for the directory, give them /yourdomain-www/list (where you put in your domain name where I have "yourdomain") and something like /yourdomain-www/list/images for the images directory.  The rest of the information is your domain name and ftp username and password and it will install for you.

Note: we can't offer support on any of the mailing lists on this page. The one in the control panel (smartlist) seems to have problems of it's own and if you can't get it to work in a reasonable amount of time, I would suggest that you use the one that I have mentioned above.

This program also does multiple mailing lists:
