Hosting Support FAQ Topic #2 - Publishing Your Website

Publishing Your Website using Microsoft Publisher

Save your Web site as a .pub file  If you want to use Publisher to update your Web site at a later time, you must save your Publisher Web site as a .pub file, regardless of the publishing method you use. Although you can use Publisher 2000 to generate your Web site as an HTML file, you can't open HTML files in Publisher. Therefore, the only way to update your site is to edit your .pub file and then republish it.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

(If you would rather use Front Page extensions, please see the Web Folder section below)

If your ISP does not support FrontPage Server Extensions, publish your files to the Internet or an intranet by using a transfer method known as File Transfer Protocol, or FTP. To use this method, you must first add an FTP site to your FTP Locations.

To add an FTP site to your FTP Locations:

  1. On your Web page in Publisher, click Open on the File menu
  2. Click the arrow next to the Look in box, and then click Add/Modify FTP Locations
  3. Type the FTP site name in the Name of FTP site box.
    For example, type samples.microsoft.com
  4. Click User in the Log on as box to log on to an FTP site that you have user privileges for, and then type your password in the Password box.
-Do Not- Click "Anonymous" in the Log on as box to log on anonymously.
  5. Click Add
  6. Click OK

Once you've added the FTP site to your FTP Locations, you can publish your site to the Web using the FTP location, as described below.

To publish your Web site to an FTP location:

  1. Click Save As Web Page on the File Menu
  2. In the Look in box, click FTP Locations
  3. Double-click the site you want to publish to
  4. Double-click the "www" folder to go into that directory on the server
  5. Click OK

Web Folders

You can save it to a web folder, but make sure you go out to your administration suite first and install FrontPage extensions. If you do not want to mess with the FP extensions (they cause you not to be able to use the "Protect Directories", "Redirect URL's" or the stats), then there is an alternative FTP process above)

To add a new Web folder to your current Web folders:

  1. On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon
  2. Double-click Web Folders
  3. Double-click Add Web Folder
  4. Follow the instructions in the Add Web Folder Wizard

Your new Web folder appears in a list under Web Folders.

To save files to the Web server, drag them along with any supporting folders to the newly created Web folder, or use the following procedure.

To save your Web site to a Web folder:

  1. On your Web page in Publisher, click Save As Web Page on the File menu.
  2. Click Web Folders on the Places Bar
  3. Click the folder you want to publish your Web site to
  4. Click OK
