Hosting Support FAQ Topic #2 - Publishing Your Website
Publishing Your Website using Cute FTP
Starting out
When you
first log on to Cute FTP, you will find yourself in the "FTP site
manager". In order to connect to your server, you must create a site login
file.
Creating a login file
First, click on the "Add
site" button.

Site label
- The name that you will use to identify the login file.
Host
Address -
www.DOMAIN (or your IP address if your domain has not been resolved yet)
User ID
- Your username (as stated in the welcome letter).
Password
- Your password (as stated in the welcome letter)
type
- If you are just starting to use this program, then it is best to select
"Normal".
Transfer
type
- There are three methods of file transfer: ASCII, Binary, and Auto.
"ASCII"
is used when you are only uploading text files (HTML, CGI, Word documents,
etc.).
"Binary"
is used when uploading images and graphics (JPEGs, GIFs, Bitmaps, Animation,
etc.).
If you plan
on uploading both images and text files, select "Auto".
Host Type
- Unless
you are proficient in FTP, it is best to leave this on "Auto-Detect".
Initial
Remote Directory
- Type in the directory that you are trying to upload to. Your default directory
is "/" , but you will need to upload your files to the "/domainname-www"
directory. You see a link to the "www" directory and you will need to
click there to get to the above mentioned directory..
Click the "OK" button.
The remaining function may be used at your
discretion. We suggest that you stick to the basics if this is your first time
with an FTP program.

Connecting...
Once you
have created a login file, all you have to do is select the file and click on
the "Connect" button.

Once you connect to your account,
you will see your files from your computer on the left side and the files on the
server on the right side. You will need to select the file(s) that you want to
upload and click the "up" arrow to upload it to your directory on the
server and then it will appear in the right hand side of the screen.

I'm in, now what do I do?
Now that
you are inside your server, you will be brought to the default upload directory.
Moving around the
directories
The FTP
program works much like looking through the files in your computer. The green
arrow is used to go back one directory.
Change directory
- Located as the fifth icon from the right side of the action bar. This function
is used when you wish to move directly to a specific directory,
i.e. /domainname-www/images.
Transferring files
Once you are
connected, you will be ready to move the files from your computer to your
server. Please remember what "Transfer type" you selected, and only
upload the files of the appropriate group into
your browser window
