Tek4Him Client Support AreaHosting Support FAQ Topic #1 - Getting Started (Control Panel)The Administration Suite (Control Panel) makes managing your web space fun and easy. This extraordinary interface offers you a way to quickly view account-related information and provides easy access to the wide variety of tools and utilities that come with your account. With the click of a mouse, you can administer your web space, e-mail accounts, directories, cgi-bin (program script storage area) and all the special features offered, including site statistics and shopping carts. You can even add additional features to your account whenever you need them. Gain control and flexibility to make changes within your own time frame and according to your own particular business needs. Please click on the area below that you want to know more about and it should
take you to the point in the page that corresponds with it. If not, please
scroll down the page until you get to the proper explanation. Administrative Link at the Top This link takes you back to the main page (screen shot above) from any area that you are in when you are within the administrative suite. The Account Glance section of the Control Panel allows you to view the following basic information about your account. Domain Name: Shows the domain name of the account that is being used. Domain User: Shows the username for the account that is being used. Domain IP: Shows the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the account that is being used. This domain IP address is equivalent to the alphabetical domain name. Package: Shows the package title under which this account is currently set up. E-mail: The e-mail address of the account owner. Contract Length: The duration of time in the contract for which you signed up. Status: Shows the current status of the account. The various statuses are Normal, Suspended and Grace Period. Occasionally, the status of Deleted is also used though not necessarily on this screen. Signup Date: Shows the date the contract and account were started. The Resources Available section of the Control Panel displays how many of your account's resources have been used and how many remain free. The following resource statistics are displayed here: Disk Quota: Displays the figure, in megabytes, of how much disk space your account has used and how much remains available to you. E-Mail: Displays the number of e-mail accounts you already have and the number that are still free for your use and set up. Mailing List: Displays the number of mailing lists you are currently maintaining and the number you can still set up. Transfer: Displays the amount of data that has been transferred via the current account. The Control Panel Language setting allows you to switch among English and Spanish. Once you have changed this setting, all of the files in the Control Panel (all the tools, help pages, etc.) will be displayed in the new language. Simply reselect the other language to switch back. Currently, the language options available are English, Spanish and German. (The addition of French is planned for the near future.) 1. From the Language drop-down list,
select the language for your Control Panel. The File Manager is a very powerful feature. It allows you to manipulate all
the files in your web site. You are able to create, delete, and rename your
files. You can also upload files from your local PC to the server in File
Manager. Plus, you can edit the HTML in any of your files from this option.
Everything you need to manage your site can be found in this feature. Always
remember that for your files to show up on the web, they *have* to be in the www
folder (or yourdomain-www which is the same place actually). Do
not ever delete anything that you did not put there. There must be certain files
and folders there in order for everything to work. Click here to learn more about File Manager This will allow you to change your password. Note that this will change the ftp and Control Panel password, but *not* the email passwords for your different email accounts. To change the email password, use the Mail Manager. Also, changing your password here will not change your Front Page password and if you change your password in the Control Panel, you will also need to change your password in your Front Page program. This shows how much server space and bandwidth (transfer) you have taken up. To say a little about transfer: If you have a page that is 25k in size and 3 images that are 25k each and a midi file that is 75k, then when someone looks at that one page, it will take up 175k worth of transfer. The Mail Manager is where you can manage all aspects of your email accounts. You can add, edit, and delete email accounts. You can also change the password on any of your email accounts. Plus, if you have Mailing Lists installed, you would go here to set them up. Finally, this is where you go if you wish to set up email aliases. Click here to learn more about Mail Manager The Site Statistics feature gives you access to your site's web statistics, such as hits, transfers, etc. If you are having trouble understanding how to interpret those results, go to this site: http://www.netstore.de/Supply/http-analyze/results.html This Options allows you to install the Mailing List program. After it has been installed, you need to create and maintain your mailing lists with the Mail Manager. You can also remove the mailing list program after it has been installed if you do not wish to use it. Click here for more information about Mailing Lists The MS FrontPage option allows you to install FrontPage extensions - which are necessary in order to use FrontPage with your site. You can also verify that they are installed, or remove them if you do not wish to use them anymore. If you are going to be using FrontPage to publish your site *always make sure you install the FrontPage extensions first before ever uploading anything* This is a graphical web-based program that gives you the ability to set up your web site from scratch, without any knowledge of HTML, or the use of a program like MS FrontPage. After the site is created, you can make it your main domain's page, or you can have it be a subdirectory under your main domain. From this option, you can verify that the counter program is installed for your account. Also, you can find directions for setting up a counter on one of your pages. Finally, after the counter has been installed on your pages, you can set the value of the counter from here. Using this option, you can password-protect any directory you own (make sure you don't password protect that main directory, though!). This will prevent users from viewing the contents of a directory unless they have permission (ie. you give them the username and password). You can set any number of users using this feature. Note that you cannot use this feature if you have FrontPage Extensions installed. You would need to use FrontPage itself to perform this function. Redirect URL allows you to set up a redirection so that user that type in one URL will automatically be sent to another URL. Note that you cannot use this feature if you have FrontPage Extensions installed. You would need to use FrontPage itself to perform this function. This feature will allow you to install and manage the WebGlimpse Search Engine on your site. This Search Engine will allow your users to perform searches on your web site. Formmail allows you to use a form to receive email from your users. Directions for using Formmail can be found under this option. Formmail.pl is already set up in our global cgi-bin and you call it in your forms like this: /cgi-sys/formmail.pl Click on your Formmail icon to learn more about what options you have to use with it. This option will allow you to set up your PGP key on the server. This allows you to use PGP in your scripts or with our PGPMail script. You must first have PGP installed on your local PC, and create a PGP key pair before uploading the key to the server. PGP is necessary if you use our shopping cart because any information sent through email is not safe even if you take the information on a secure server. (see the PGPMail icon for instructions on how to use it) MIME Types allows you to set certain programs to be used for specific extensions. For example, all files that end in .ram would be set to use Real Player on the user's PC. Most users do not need to use this feature unless you need to set your site to parse .html files for ssi calls. Also, note that you cannot use this feature if you have FrontPage Extensions installed. You would need to use FrontPage itself to perform this function. PGPMail is simply the Formmail script, except that it encrypts the email via PGP before it is sent to the client. This option includes directions for using PGPMail. Note that you must upload your PGP key before you can use this script. If you need telnet access to our servers, it can only be done using SSH. We have it set up to use RSA authentication. You will need to create a key using your PC's SSH software, then use this feature to upload the key to our servers. Once it is uploaded, you will be able to connect to our servers using SSH after contacting us to enable SSH on your server. You will need to fax us a copy of your driver's license and your signature before we can enable it. Please email us for instructions. This option is for if you want to install a secure certificate that you purchase out at http://www.thawte.com If you do not want to have your own certificate, you can use ours to call your domain pages securely. It would be in the fashion of https://host.christianwebhost.com/yourdomain/yourfiles.html Please email us to find out which server you are on and we can tell you how to call your files securely. MySQL is a database engine that you can use with your web site. This feature of the CP will allow you to create a new MySQL database, and manage it. You will be able to add/edit/delete tables, fields, and values. You can also run queries on the database if you need to. The Network Trouble Shooter allows you to perform a traceroute from our server to your local PC. You may also trace from your web site on our server to any other location on the Internet. A traceroute shows the path that information travels over the Internet to go from one location to another. If you are experiencing slowness or problems when connecting to your web site, you can use this to see a snapshot of where the problem is occurring.
